Captain Jack: What did you do before you got into the adult industry?
Ava Addams: I was working at a doctor’s office doing medical coding and billing and going to nursing school. I was kind of sick of living in Houston. Even though it’s my home town, I wanted something different. My girlfriend convinced me to move to Miami with her. I started working with Playboy and was doing promotional stuff with them. So I was doing all that then met a girl and got into porn! It was a factor of basically being bored with my life. I’ll probably get back to the medical field when I’m done with porn.
CJ: How long ago was that?
Ava: That was 2008.
CJ: You said you worked for Playboy but I hear you also appeared in the magazine. Was it one of those off-shoots, you know that “Girls of xxxx”?
Ava: I did Lingerie Special Edition, Vixens, College Girls and Cyber Girls. I tested, I shot my pictorials and stuff and then did porn and then they never contacted me again. (laughs)
CJ: Can I ask how old you are?
Ava: I’m going to be 35. (laughs)
CJ: Playboy kind of frowns on the porn industry so how did you decide to get into it?
Ava: I met Renna Ryann and her husband at-the-time worked at Arcade and he asked me if I wanted to shoot. He asked if I wanted to do boy/girl and I said, ‘NO!’ but I like girls. I thought I’d try girl/girl just for fun. Then I met a guy in the industry and started dating him and he didn’t want me to do boy/girl even though I was curious about it. So I waited awhile and when we broke up, I started doing boy/girl. (laughs)
CJ: Did the social stigma attached to being a porn star ever enter into it? Like you might not ever be able to go back into nursing?
Ava: No because I know it won’t affect my nursing. At one point I wanted to be a teacher and I know that’s never going to happen. I thought about it a long time before I started doing boy/girl. I weighed out all the pros and cons and talked to my really good friends; I talked to my immediate family about it. I knew it would stay around for the rest of your life so once I made the decision, I said I was going to do it and make a name for myself.
CJ: Do you think it was an advantage getting into the industry at a later date as opposed to 18?
Ava: I was a crazy girl back then. I used to hang out with musicians and party. I don’t think I would have handled the industry as well back then as I did at an older age. I definitely think it’s a lot on the really young girls. If you’re not comfortable with yourself and your sexuality, it can really be detrimental. And you don’t really know yourself at 18, 19, 20. You think you do, but you don’t.
CJ: One thing I love about you, well, I love your looks, I love your breasts, I love your body, your legs, your pussy, but you’re always having fun. I don’t think I’ve seen you in something where you’re not laughing!
Ava: I do! You know what it is, I went through my phase when I worked in Miami and I didn’t always enjoy it. I still had fun but there were a couple scenes where I didn’t enjoy it. CJ: Going back to the beginning, you started out doing g/g scenes. Were you into girls before porn?
Ava: I was. I’ve always considered myself truly bisexual. I dated a girl a few years prior to getting into the industry. I don’t think I could ever be a lesbian because I like guys too much but I do enjoy being with a girl.
CJ: So the first time you shot a scene, was it overwhelming for you?
Ava: My first scene was with Molly Cavalli. It was a girl/girl and I was very nervous during the dialogue. I was super nervous and kept stuttering but once we got naked and she kissed me, I was fine. I said, ‘OK, I can do this!’ I don’t know about the dialogue but the rest is cool. CJ: Since you moved into the adult industry, have you learned anything about yourself sexually?
Ava: I was always a pretty sexual person. I don’t know if it was the age or the industry but from my time in the industry until now, I’ve definitely become a lot more confident in my sexuality and in myself.

Ava: Some of my favorites are Nightmare Before Christmas, True Romance and Dangerous Laisons. I also love Zoolander. It depends on whether I want to watch something silly and laugh or if I want something with a plot.
CJ: What about TV shows?
Ava: I don’t really have that much time to watch TV. The only shows I really watch on a regular basis is The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
CJ: What advice would you give someone who wants to enter the industry?
Ava: Make sure this is really what you want to do. Be prepared. Notice how everyone else around you is going to react because if you’re fearful of telling them, maybe you should reconsider this. Also know that it’s going to be very hard to have a personal life outside of porn. Sometimes people aren’t so understanding. And then the general public will bash you and generally put you down. But I feel if you have a good support system and people will support you, then by all means do it. If you’re just going into it because you’re broke and you need money, don’t do it. It is something you really need to thing about long-term. It will affect you for the rest of your life, I’ve lost friend’s because of it.
CJ: You’ve been in it for 6 years, how long do you think this ride is going to last? Do you have an exit strategy?
Ava: You know, I told myself I was going to quit by the time I’m 35 and I’m going to be 35 in September. I think it would be stupid of me to quit right now because I’m doing well and I’m shooting so much. And I’m at a stage where I’m popular so I think it would be really stupid to quit right now. I also said I was going to quit when I got bored; I’m definitely not bored. I don’t know. Maybe a year or two. That’s what I say but I never finalize anything. Maybe another year or two.
